If you have a string that is not null terminated, two other String constructors should be used: String(char* value, int start, int cChars); String(wchar_t* value, int start, int cChars); In all these cases, it is the GC s task to care about the resource cleanup when a string is no longer needed by the application If converting in the other direction, it is often up to the programmer to clean up a temporary string object The helper class System::Runtime::InteropServices::Marshal has several static functions that can perform the necessary conversion These functions are as follows: Marshal::StringToBSTR Marshal::StringToCoTaskMemAnsi Marshal::StringToHGlobalAnsi Marshal::StringToCoTaskMemUni Marshal::StringToHGlobalUni All these functions create native string objects with the value of the managed string All the methods are quite self-explanatory StringToBSTR creates a new COM BSTR instance.

With WCF there is less ambiguity in your services: the infrastructure forces you to be message oriented and to work with well-qualified XML-based data types WSE 30 and its future revisions will provide you with excellent preparation for working with WCF in the future This chapter contains the following: Overview of WCF architecture, including the Indigo service layer, the WCF connector, hosting environments, messaging services, and system services Understanding WCF Web services Understanding WCF applications and infrastructure How to get ready for WCF WSE 30 and WCF..

Most application servers support load balancing of requests between multiple application server instances. When using this architecture, the same application is deployed in all instances. Since the EJBs are stateless, the client can go to any of the servers being load-balanced, as seen in figure 13.5. If you want to use load balancing of stateless session beans deployed in a cluster, you need a basic understanding of RMI and remote invocation of an EJB. We briefly discussed RMI in chapter 1. Figure 13.6 shows how remote invocation of an EJB works.

Figure 13.6 The skeleton in the EJB server gives out a stub to the client. This stub is used by the client to communicate with the EJB remotely.

As evident from figure 13.6, the client stub has the information on how to communicate to the remote EJB server. Most application servers automatically generate the client stub while looking up an EJB remotely. This information is commonly based on the JNDI environments, which are populated while creating the InitialContext. You typically provide this in a jndi.properties file. If you remember our discussion from chapter 1, you provide the URL for the server that hosts the EJB we are accessing. Again, because EJB clustering is considered a proprietary enhancement, each application server implements it in its own way. That way, the application server knows the load-balancing algorithm and the servers being load-balanced. An example of this appears in figure 13.7. A remote EJB lookup requires that you specify a JNDI provider URL for a JNDI server. The client looks up the EJB and downloads the client stub. The stub contains information about all the servers being load-balanced, as well as the loadbalancing algorithm being used. Once more, check your vendor documentation for the various JNDI properties that you need for creating the InitialContext. You may have to do some configuration in your EJB applications to enable load balancing between different application server instances. If you want to use load balancing for stateless session beans, as a developer you ll have to do the following:

StringToCoTaskMemAnsi and StringToHGlobalAnsi allocate memory for the string on the COM heap or the Win32 global heap, and initialize this memory with the ANSI code representation of the managed string s value StringToCoTaskMemUni and StringToHGlobalUni convert to a native Unicode string that is either allocated on the COM heap or on the Win32 global heap In all these cases, the native strings need to be cleaned up explicitly The helper class Marshal provides the following functions for the cleanup: Marshal::FreeBSTR Marshal::FreeCoTaskMem Marshal::FreeHGlobal If you want to convert to a const wchar_t* that is needed only for a short time, you can choose an approach that is more convenient and faster: the header file vcclrh declares a function called PtrToStringChars: interior_ptr<const wchar_t> PtrToStringChars(const String^ source); Using this function, you can retrieve an interior_ptr<const wchar_t> to the Unicode characters of a managed string.

Figure 13.7 The stub that is downloaded by the client is instrumented with the load-balancing algorithm and has knowledge of the load-balancing servers.

Build a remote interface for your stateless session bean and expose the appropriate methods in the remote interface. Reduce the number of method invocations by using a coarse-grained session bean. Make appropriate configurations using the vendor-specific deployment descriptors if required. Because the client code for the EJB needs to know that you are using clustered application server instances, provide the URL for the clustered JNDI server or application server.
